Blog - Watch your Words
One of my favourite questions artists ask when they sit down for an interview is "can I swear?" My usual answer is, "we're the CBC." And by that I mean: no, we have standards here.
Or sort of. Because we plays bands with the 'F' word in their name, and many of the songs feature all kinds of swearing. I've often thought that CBC Radio 3 falls into a grey area. Since we're online we don't have to worry about things commercial radio does, but we are part of the CBC so we do have standards and guidelines that we must follow.
In the end, that means you do hear "those" words, just not by me.The issue of inappropriate language on television is part of a US Supreme Court discussion right now. The issue centres around prime time and f-bombs. In other words, you might know those words, just don't use them. Cee-Lo Green didn't forget that.
Yesterday Jay-Z apparently announced in a poem (has not been verified yet) that he was giving up the B word, that being "Bitch." The story goes now that he's a dad he's got a new problem and that being seeming like an insensitive lout. So it seems words really do have meaning.
And that brings me to you:
DO CERTAIN WORDS OFFEND YOU?
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SWEARING IN SONGS/HOSTING/INTERVIEWS?
I'll try and keep my language as clean as possible today. No bars of soap needed.
